The exploration of caves for various purposes has been undergone for thousands of years. But in recent decades, spelunking has become the chosen form of recreation for many adventurous types. If you’re looking for a brand new thrill, and enjoy physical exercise, you may want to find out more about spelunking.

Spelunkers utilize a variety of skills, from climbing to crawling, to navigate caves. They choose caving due to a wide variety of motivations as well. These include the athletic challenge posed by some caves, academic interest in gathering data, and the spirit of exploration itself–seeing new environments, and possibly discovering places never seen by any human being before. There are many sub-specialties in spelunking, including cave diving, photography, and geological and biological research.

Many of the challenges to be derived from spelunking are dependent on the difficulty of the cave being explored, and how well known it already is. There’s also a significant amount of safety training, equipment, and expertise required. Beginners should fulfill their interest in the hobby by contacting a local spelunking organization. Some spelunking clubs and caverns that are maintained by private or government institutions, offer beginning lessons, and a chance to try out spelunking safely with rented or borrowed equipment and experienced guides.
